The Mikes welcomed Leamington FC to the Trevor Brown Memorial Ground for a late kick-off at 12.00pm for a League game against a team with a slightly better record than the Mikes and with the whole squad available and playing on the excellent 3g surface they were looking for a good result.
The game started with the Mikes full of attacking intent with players chasing everything and closing down well and after only 4 minutes a long kick out by Casey allowed Christopher to chase and cause the Leamington No.6 problems before pinching the ball off him inside the 18 yard area to feed Jack to sweep the ball past the Leamington keeper and make it 1-0. The Mikes were in full flow at this time but too many times the wrong pass or decision was made allowing the Leamington side to survive and on 23 minutes they paid the price for their indecision as the ball was played down the right wing for the Leamington No.9 to chase and win the ball and he was given time and space to turn before firing the ball into the far corner past Casey to make it 1-1. The Mikes were still looking the better team and were looking the most likely to score and on 41 minutes a free-kick was won on the left wing which allowed Max to deliver a great ball to the far post where Finlay attacked it but his header was turned over the bar by the Leamington keeper for a corner. The Mikes kept trying and on 43 minutes a ball was bouncing in midfield and as Ryan attacked it his header fell to Christopher who fired early at goal but the Leamington keeper sprang to his left to turn the ball round the post for another corner but as the half ran out the score remained 1-1.
The second half started with the Mikes looking the most likely to score until the 54th minute when the ball was allowed to fall in the box and three Mikes players had chance to clear only to fall to the Leamington No.9 who flicked the ball into the top corner and make it 1-2. The Mikes player’s confidence was drained and again bad decision making and playing the wrong pass allowed the Leamington team to control the play and when the Mikes did manage to get chances with shots and free-kicks they failed to test the Leamington keeper. The Mikes were lucky to not go further behind on 61 minutes when a vicious shot was spilled by Casey straight into the Leamington No.16 path and with the goal at his mercy he missed the target and on 67 minutes the Mikes had a chance to equalise when Jack played in a good free-kick to give Charlie a free header but he missed the target and three minutes later the Mikes had the ball in the net but Jack was flagged for off-side. Leamington were playing on the break and on 79 minutes again the Mikes defenders failed to clear the ball and it fell to the Leamington No.9 to finish and make it 1-3 and two minutes later they made in 1-4 when Chris gave away a free-kick on the edge of the 18 yard area and the Leamington No.3 fired in a cross shot that Casey misjudged and palmed the ball off the post and into the net. The Mikes kept flooding forward and again too many lose passes and a lot of bad judgement didn’t allow them a way back and with time running out on the 90th minute Chris broke through the Leamington defence and as he was brought down the Referee pointed to the Penalty spot and Chris grabbed the ball to take the kick but it was tame and the Leamington keeper made an easy save and at the final whistle it was another bad loss against a team that was there for the taking with too many players playing for themselves rather than the team.
