The Mikes 1-0 Continental Star

The Mikes secured a much needed win after being made to sweat following a glut of missed early chances.

Still looking for their first win since November 29th the Mikes made two changes from the side that drew with Shepshed Dynamo a week ago. Fit again Adam Robinson replaced Rudi Misambo in the centre of the defence whilst Cameron Jones replaced Chris Gumery as a 4-4-2 formation was restored. On a tricky surface following overnight rain and frost it was the Mikes who dominated the opening half against a Star defence that included Reuben Wilson a former Boldmere player.

The home side led by the Clarke ‘twins’ Jermaine and Kieran created several early opportunities and it was the latter who was foiled by the visitors keeper early on with new father Jason Holmes failing to capitalise and celebrate the birth of his new son by skying the rebound over the clubhouse instead of passing it into the empty net.

The Mikes defence was rarely troubled during the first half but despite the promptings of Lewis, Forde, Jones and Holmes clear cut chances were at a premium. Indeed the goal when it came was initially fortuitous, Jermaine Clarke closed down Hurdman, blocked his clearance, retrieved the loose ball and cut in from the left before planting a lovely cross shot past Cheshire into the far corner. It gave the Mikes a deserved interval lead but as the players had a well-earned break the crowd were hoping that the missed chances would not prove costly.

Connor Leek replaced the injured Jones at the break thus providing a different outlet to further test the visitors back line. That at least was the theory but a second goal to put the result beyond doubt was not forthcoming. Continental Star more than shared the possession as the half progressed and with both Clarkes falling victim to offside decisions on several occasions a mainly midfield battle ensued.

Neither goalkeeper was seriously tested and when referee Cox signalled the end of proceedings it meant that the Mikes had kept a clean sheet for only the second time in the league this season.
