Poor Mikes get a wake up call

On a sun kissed afternoon the Mikes failed to provide any sort of sunshine for their supporters with a real end of the season performance. It was the second game in succession when the opposing keepers were barely stretched throughout the ninety minutes. Despite a bright opening with Jack Skinner looking lively up front and Luke Shearer seeing plenty of the ball down the right flank it all went pear shaped once Lye got their noses in front on fifteen minutes.
Manager Stuart Grosvenor shuffled the pack for this game leaving regulars Rikardo Reid and Ben Usher-Shipway on the bench and recalled his regular central defenders Harry Craven and Joe Lyng despite a first clean sheet for four months in the previous game.
In an even opening quarter of an hour Boldmere looked the better side without creating any clear-cut openings, Shearer scuffed a shot wide and Ryan Shaw had an effort easily gathered by Kieron Boucher. On fifteen minutes Owen Parry was dispossessed in an advanced position down the right, Lye fed the ball quickly through midfield and played a long ball down the inside left channel. Alister Brauns looked favourite to tidy up but was caught by Jack Till who then rounded the full back and crossed for the simplest of tap ins for Geoff Hill. Some fifteen minutes later it was that man Till again, this time popping up on the right flank and teasing Reece Mitchell before sending in a cross. The Mikes defenders appealed for offside and concentration lapsed leaving Hill to tuck inside Brauns and fire home inside the near post past the unsighted Lewis Fenney.
Although now looking simply second-best Joe Lyng had a good header from a Parry corner tipped over by Boucher. The half time whistle beckoned when the game was put to bed. Till yet again broke from the centre circle with not a defender in sight and as Fenney approached the edge of his box to close the forward down he unselfishly slipped the ball to Sam Tye who walked the ball into the unguarded net. It meant the second half would merely be a damage limitation exercise unless a very early response was coming from the Mikes in the second period.
As it turned out the game meandered along in the Easter sunshine with little threat to either goal until the latter stages. Holmes had an effort easily saved whilst Lyng hit the side netting with a left footed effort following a Parry free kick. At the other end Fenney had to be alert to palm away a looping cross from Jack Downing then saved well at the feet of Hill to deny the striker his hat-trick. He did not have to wait long to get his third, Till again picked up a long ball down the left and found Hill with a short pass. The striker checked inside Craven and fired easily past Fenney to complete the scoring. It completed a sorry afternoon for the Mikes with many players below par and a similar display next weekend should leave some sweating over their places in the Walsall Senior Cup Final on May 7. A glance at the league table, despite a reasonable league position, tells exactly what the problem is. Too many goals in the against column and for the regular spectators too many easily conceded.
The Mikes: Lewis Fenney; Alister Brauns; Reece Mitchell; Owen Parry: Harry Craven; Joe Lyng; Steve Simpson (Cameron Gayle 81); Ryan Shaw; Jack Skinner; Jason Holmes (Rikardo Reid 62); Luke Shearer (Ben Usher-Shipway 62). Subs not used: Craig Milligan, Kyle Byrne
