Improved second half performance sees Mikes advance.

After failing to establish a lead in the first half despite enjoying the majority of possession the Mikes had to come back from a goal down to overcome the Lockmen and earn an away tie at Heanor Town in the next round. It was to be Nick Heath’s last match in temporary charge and he made several changes from the side knocked out of the FA Cup a week previously. Lewis Fenney, Harry Craven and Stephen Palmer were all recalled following their escapades in Las Vegas whilst Harry Sweeney retained the left back berth after his substitute appearance at Stratford. Kyle Byrne started on the left flank allowing Jack Skinner to lead the line in place of Rikardo Reid.

The Mikes started strongly with Simeon Tulloch to the fore down the right flank and Tom Lawton his opposite number was given a testing time. Several crosses flew straight across the goalmouth with no one managing to get on the end of them and test Chris Adamson in the visitor’s goal. At the other end centre forward Jack Dale was somewhat abrasive and incurred the wrath of several of the Mikes players with some hefty challenges that referee Guy Thrower appeared to ignore. The official further incensed the home supporters when Brandon Williams, up supporting the attack was hacked down in the box. It was an understatement to say it was the most obvious penalty but it wasn’t given. No goals at the interval was reflective of the serious efforts on goal during the first half.

Willenhall, who boasted a 100% record coming into the game, but at a lower level would perhaps struggle with fitness levels as the game wore on and so it turned out. Despite taking the lead on 52 minutes through a penalty by Stephen Holmes who himself had been brought down by Williams, they were distinctly second best once the Mikes equalised some ten minutes later. Joe Lyng was the Boldmere scorer heading home powerfully from a Tulloch corner, two minutes later the Mikes were ahead. Byrne who was increasing his effect on the game as the half-progressed beat Jack Turton, not for the first time, and his cross ricocheted off Adamson before rebounding into the net off Thomas Jones for an own goal. Lyng then baulked, which is putting it politely, the rampaging Dale and was yellow carded after much deliberation between the referee and his assistant when the visiting contingent thought the centre backs challenge deserved a red. Dale was to limp off minutes later. It was all Boldmere now and Byrne once again stripped his markers before cutting the ball back to Owen Parry to score from the edge of the box before substitute Reid added a fourth, his first effort rebounding off Adamson with his second finding the net from close range.

In the finish it was a comfortable victory but not without a tremor or two when Willenhall led early in the second half. It is now onto a new era at Church Road with the appointment of former Mikes striker Neil Kitching as Manager. He will be assisted by Nick Amos and Ian Cooper.

The Mikes: Lewis Fenney, Brandon Williams (Cameron Gayle 72), Harry Sweeney, Alister Brauns (Rikardo Reid 56), Harry Craven, Joe Lyng, Simeon Tulloch (Taimoor Hussain 85), Stephen Palmer, Jack Skinner, Owen Parry, Kyle Byrne.
